I love music clubs, and I know that some music movements are in the history of music because of small, warm little clubs, such diverse styles like punk and be bop, just to put two simple examples on the table.
But, when you go to a theater, and I'm not talking about an opera theater, a small, or like in this case a "medium size" theater, things, like the sound, a big stage, a scenography, can give you another perspective about the same artist. I can't say it's better, it's something different, and with Roxana Amed on the stage I need to use that word a lot: different.
The ND / Ateneo it's almost full, a cold friday night outside in Buenos Aires, a quiet audience waiting for the show to start.
"Amazing grace" is the song chosen by Roxana Amed as the first one, and like each first song from her shows sung "a cappella". It's not only a display of a superb technique, the feelings are inside every word from the lyrics.
After that, all the musicians, from the regular band, jump into the stage, to share "Entremundos" (S-Music, 2007), Roxana Amed's last record.
Claudio "Coki" Iuliano and Sebastián Espósito on guitars, Fernando Galimany on acoustic bass and Mario Gusso on percussion, are there to support the singing and the guitar from Roxana Amed. But these musicians are not just a decorative environment, they're talented, and from song to song they deliver more and more to the audience.
Some songs for her previous album, "Limbo" (EMI, 2004), are also included here, and some help from guest musicians in most of the songs.
Adrián Iaies piano, Fernando Kabusacki on guitars, Pepi Taveira on drums and percussion and Andrés Beeuwsaert on keyboards, the four at top level, you can't wait for less if you know these incredibly gifted musicians.
I'm not leaving one of the guests behind, because he's not really a guest, when there's good music in the air, Pedro Aznar it's in his natural territory, and here, as the producer of "Entremundos" (S-Music, 2007), he can go up and down the stage bringing always something fresh to share, including his version of Joni Mitchell's.
Roxana Amed it's not a jazz singer, but she knows the spirit of jazz, the magic word: freedom, on her own songs, or in beautiful versions, like "Strange fruit" (Lewis Allan), popular thanks to Billie Holiday. In the show she sings this last song, playing the piano too, and the dark and sad melody, along with the message from this old "testimonial song", it's alive for all of us to remember the horror of racism.
I'm going to pick two songs from "Entremundos" (S-Music, 2007) to give you a broader information about Roxana Amed creative skill.
"Entremundos" and "Lejos de casa". I know it's hard to write good songs, the world of music it's full of ugly songwriters, even good, great songwriters with ugly songs, so, how you can put two songs like those in one record. Deep songs, full of emotions, like the ones Roxana Amed share with the audience in every second, in each song presentation, with laughs, with jokes about movies and life.
When you're different, in life, the music business (I believe that's a form of life too, like the movies...), it's not an easy path, you need to have talent and crystal clear ideas to go ahead. Roxana Amed it's opening a space for the people looking for different music, and we know it, she has the tools to keep the direction into a better music world.
