Abbey Lincoln: la voz que amo / Abbey Lincoln: the voice I love

We insist!

Long ago and far away, in a previous life (not really), as a music critic, a good exercise was the mix between new records and not so new, and that's the spirit to write this article.
Abbey Lincoln it's not new in the music game, the oldest record I've got from her it's from 1959: "Abbey is blue", just to name a few musicians, Kenny Dorham , Wynton Kelly and Philly Joe Jones
are there, in seven songs, the regular Max Roach band at that time, in the other three. What musicians!
Material from Kurt Weill, an Abbey Lincoln original, she was even then showing her great skill for beautfiul compositions, and some standards here and there.
In the sixties she was an important activist, in the socially shaked United States, with his husband, Max Roach, they recorded a milestone in the music history: We insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite (1960), figthing against racism and bigotry.
And then a jump in time, her contract with the Verve label was really a good choice. "A turtle's dream" (1995) it's cleary one of the best records, not only for her, but also for the music world, with Kenny Barron, Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny, strings in some songs, the saxophone of Julien Lourau, plus the great Victor Lewis on drums. Enough Abbey's compositions to make our skin tremble like an autumn leaf.
After that record more beauty to share: "Over the years" (2000) and "It's me" (2003), just a personal thought, you'll find much more if you pay some attention to her music.
And, as I like to say, thank you Abbey, thank you for your voice, thank you for your music.
