For me Woody Shaw's legacy it's beyond music, strange thing, for me he's like someone from my family, that's how I feel about this wonderful musician, and I believe many of you share these feelings, Dave Douglas, of course, it's on that "list".
Dave Douglas, another talented trumpet player, will be the Curator & Artistic Director for The Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT), and this year the Festival will be honoring the huge impact from Woody Shaw (1944-1989) on jazz, and, labels aside, on music.
The date, september 25 to 28, at the Jazz Standard (116 East 27th Street, New York, 212-576-2232).
But that's not all, we've got an ace under our sleeve, because on september 27, a special celebration with Woody Shaw's music, and The Woody Shaw Legacy Ensemble: Brass Knights, with the musical direction from Victor Lewis, yes my friends, the one and only drummer and composer, and a more than important part in Woody Shaw's bands, helping Victor Lewis to deliver some of the best music you can enjoy these days, Sean Jones (trumpet), Nick Roseboro (trumpet), Ezana Edwards (trumpet, member from the band Foxhound), Dwayne Burno (bass), and Mulgrew Miller (piano).
If you're in New York you can't miss this chance, to say, with all the musicians, and even with me, from this far away corner from South America: thanks Woody, thanks for the music.

Victor Lewis: tambores musicales / Victor Lewis: musical drums

Joyas musicales como Victor Lewis Quintet, "Know It Today, Know It Tomorrow" (Red Records, 1992), Victor Lewis Family Portrait Band, "Family Portrait"(AudioQuest Records, 1992), Victor Lewis Quintet, "eeeyyess!" (enja Records, 1997) y Victor Lewis Trio, "Three Way Conversations" (Red Records, 1998).

Drummers, you can find thousands, millions out there, but not all of them can play the drums as a musical instrument, I mean, making you feel as if you were listening a piano or a guitar, not only a nice and steady rhythm. If you want to listen a perfect example, well, you need to listen to Mr. Victor Lewis.
Victor Lewis it' s in some of my all time favorite albums, like Woody Shaw's "Stepping Stones: Live at the Village Vanguard" (Columbia 1978), Stan Getz's "Anniversary" (Verve Records, 1990), Kenny Barron "Quickstep" (enja Records, 1991) and Abbey Lincoln's "A turtle's dream" (Verve Records, 1995), all wonderful and unique artistic experiences (just to name a few, his whole career is amazing), but, some weeks ago, a "good source", told me about Victor Lewis recordings as leader, material not too familiar for me, until now. Musical jewels as Victor Lewis Quintet, "Know It Today, Know It Tomorrow" (Red Records, 1992), Victor Lewis Family Portrait Band, "Family Portrait"(AudioQuest Records, 1992), Victor Lewis Quintet, "eeeyyess!" (enja Records, 1997) and Victor Lewis Trio, "Three Way Conversations" (Red Records, 1998).
I knew Victor Lewis ability as composer, and of course as an extremely musical percussionist, but as leader, he goes one step beyond, an experience all music lovers must listen.
Sometimes the jazz world is a box full of nice surprises, most of the times thanks to the talent of musicians still fighting for a little space, after years of good music, Victor Lewis it's here, in us, the chance to open our ears, minds and hearts, to his beautiful music.

Victor Lewis Quintet, "Know It Today, Know It Tomorrow" (Red Records, 1992).

Victor Lewis Family Portrait Band, "Family Portrait" (AudioQuest Records, 1992).

Victor Lewis Trio, Three Way Conversations (Red Records, 1998).

Abbey Lincoln: la voz que amo / Abbey Lincoln: the voice I love

We insist!

Long ago and far away, in a previous life (not really), as a music critic, a good exercise was the mix between new records and not so new, and that's the spirit to write this article.
Abbey Lincoln it's not new in the music game, the oldest record I've got from her it's from 1959: "Abbey is blue", just to name a few musicians, Kenny Dorham , Wynton Kelly and Philly Joe Jones
are there, in seven songs, the regular Max Roach band at that time, in the other three. What musicians!
Material from Kurt Weill, an Abbey Lincoln original, she was even then showing her great skill for beautfiul compositions, and some standards here and there.
In the sixties she was an important activist, in the socially shaked United States, with his husband, Max Roach, they recorded a milestone in the music history: We insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite (1960), figthing against racism and bigotry.
And then a jump in time, her contract with the Verve label was really a good choice. "A turtle's dream" (1995) it's cleary one of the best records, not only for her, but also for the music world, with Kenny Barron, Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny, strings in some songs, the saxophone of Julien Lourau, plus the great Victor Lewis on drums. Enough Abbey's compositions to make our skin tremble like an autumn leaf.
After that record more beauty to share: "Over the years" (2000) and "It's me" (2003), just a personal thought, you'll find much more if you pay some attention to her music.
And, as I like to say, thank you Abbey, thank you for your voice, thank you for your music.

Woody Shaw - Stepping Stones: Live at the Village Vanguard (Bonus Tracks)

Woody Shaw - Stepping Stones: Live at the Village Vanguard (Bonus Tracks)

Bienvenido a casa, nuevamente, Woody Shaw. Me alegra verte por la ciudad.

From time to time record companies remember we're here. "We"...people wishing our favorite music on a new and shiny CD.
And in august 16 the Columbia / Legacy label made our wish come true, with: Woody Shaw - Stepping Stones: Live at the Village Vanguard (Bonus Tracks).
I don't like "top ten" or "top forty" lists, but it's clear this record belongs to a "top form" Woody Shaw (cornet and flugelhorn).
Woody, with some of the best, and it's sad to say, underrated musicians of the jazz scene.
There you can find Carter Jefferson (saxophone), Onaje Allan Gumbs (piano), Clint Houston (bass) and Victor Lewis (drums).
This group was his regular "team" at the time of the recording, and you can feel that in the air.
I've got and old cassette recording from the session, thanks to a good friend, now the cassette is ready for my music museum.
Welcome home, again, Woody Shaw. I'm glad to see you in town.
